So tonight I was accused of being cynical in response to that I looked up the word cynical on webster.com (I seem to always have a laptop sitting upon my lap ooo how handy yay) and here was the definition:
1: captious , peevish2: having or showing the attitude or temper of a cynic: as a: contemptuously distrustful of human nature and motives<those cynical men who say that democracy cannot be honest and efficient — F. D. Roosevelt> b: based on or reflecting a belief that human conduct is motivated primarily by self-interest <a cynical ploy to cheat customers>
synonyms cynical , misanthropic , pessimistic mean deeply distrustful. cynical implies having a sneering disbelief in sincerity or integrity <cynical about politicians’ motives>. misanthropic suggests a rooted distrust and dislike of human beings and their society <a solitary and misanthropic artist>. pessimistic implies having a gloomy, distrustful view of life<pessimistic about the future>
1. Well captious means:
marked by an often ill-natured inclination to stress faults and raise objections <captious critics>2 : calculated to confuse, entrap, or entangle in argument <a captious question> synonyms see critical
Now Peevish means:
1 : querulous in temperament or mood : fretful2 : perversely obstinate <a peevish child>3 : marked by ill temper
So what exactly is the attitude of a cynic well again what is a cynic, a cynic is:
1capitalized : an adherent of an ancient Greek school of philosophers who held the view that virtue is the only good and that its essence lies in self-control and independence2: a faultfinding captious critic ; especially : one who believes that human conduct is motivated wholly by self-interest
I don’t know about you but, a cynic does not sound like a great person to be.
Hmm so I am left with the thought of cynicism, I don’t think so, but someone else does. This wouldn’t matter so much if it were not someone who knew me.
Through the years of reading the word I have learned and am still learning that our lives aren’t meant to be lived out for ourselves, but for others. i.e. why we aren’t supposed to cause others to stumble, loving others as ourselves, making right with our brothers, humbling ourselves . . . etc.
Therefore if I am labeled a cynic and that offends, then it is I who must change.
Though I must say cynicism for me, no not so much. I much more have always seen myself as an optimistic realist. I am analyzing and calculating, this may sound bad but in other words I am simply an observer who comes to a conclusion. Science next to art has always been my favorite subject next to art 🙂 I always loved being awarded those blue ribbons for science fair projects that others saw as work and I simply saw as fun.
I think the scientific method can be applied to so many things in life. We observe things/people for a little while then we tend to make a hypothesis about it/him or her which leads to us making a prediction about the object/person. This turns into an experiment in which we observe and sometimes test the object/person certain environments and under different circumstances. From all of this we form a conclusion which yes can be changed, but until then the conclusion stands solid because it has been observed and tested.
We perform the scientific method everyday from meeting a person for the first time from deciding what kind of toilet paper you pick up a the grocery store.
blah blah blah
Do you want to be known as a cynic? I don’t.
